Rules of the game

The club's own format, built on the procedures of sport mafia

This section describes the approved original mechanics. All procedures that are not redefined are kept from the club's current Sport Mafia rulebook.

Line-up and start

Exactly 12 players: 7 civilians, 1 Sheriff, the Irish Boss and Gangster, and the Italian Don and Mafioso. The first phase of the game is a day discussion and vote; only then does the first night begin. The host watches the rules for speeches, nominations, voting, the tie vote, the re-vote and discipline.

The day phase

Players speak and put forward candidates within the Sport Mafia rulebook. A speech may contain versions, suspicions, a defence, an accusation or a statement about a role. The host does not confirm that statements are true. The result of the vote decides who leaves the table, or who stays, if the current procedure allows that outcome.

The first night

The Sheriff picks two different players to check. For each, the host says: the city, the Irish mafia or the Italian mafia. The Irish Boss and the Italian Don, if alive, each independently check one player to see whether that player is the Sheriff. Each gang still in play picks a target for its shot.

The following nights

The Sheriff checks one player per night. The living Boss and Don continue with one check each for the Sheriff. While both gangs exist, the host counts the shot of one of them under a hidden alternating queue with a random start. The sides do not know the current queue. If both picked the same target, that player dies regardless of the queue; this does not mean two separate deaths.

Losing a leader and destroying a gang

After the death of the Boss or the Don, their partner keeps shooting, but that gang's night search for the Sheriff stops. If one gang is fully destroyed, the other shoots every night. There is no "empty" night because of the earlier queue.

Hidden roles and the end

When a player leaves, their role and team are not revealed until the end of the game. The city wins after all four mafia players are removed. A gang wins if the other is destroyed and its number is at least the number of living citizens; if there are no citizens and one gang outnumbers the other, the majority wins. Draws of 1 Irish + 1 Italian and of 1 Irish + 1 Italian + 1 citizen were separately marked earlier. The other disputed end states cannot be defined arbitrarily.

Limits of the rulebook

The specific limits of speeches, the rules for nominating a single candidate, the sequence of the tie vote, night gestures, the order for resolving simultaneous actions and penalties are taken from the club's current approved Sport Mafia rulebook and are not retold here.

What still needs confirmation

The final extreme draw states, the order of simultaneous night actions and the passing of information inside a gang have not yet been approved. These details are marked "needs confirmation" and are not replaced by guesswork.
